James W. Jesso Adventures Through the Mind

When it comes to the safe use of psychedelics many strong opinions come into place. Typically in the United States, we have the idea that drugs that are not prescribed by our doctors are unsafe or not medicine. If the FDA hasn’t approved the support behind a substance, then we think that there is no use to them. This may be the majority of the population but that view is starting to change.

The other side of the coin is the hardcore supporters of psychedelics. They believe and fully support the idea that psychedelics are going to change human perception and consciousness for the better. Psychedelics to them are the answer to everything and can fix or change anyone. But is this true? If we look at the 60’s movement with the influx of LSD and Timothy Leary’s movement of “tune in drop out”, did that fix all of our problems? It would seem that it did not and that from that movement we had the opposition impose some of the hardest drug policies in human history. Are we driving this debate to the same result?

My advice to people today is as follows: if you take the game of life seriously, if you take your nervous system seriously, if you take your sense organs seriously, if you take the energy process seriously, you must turn on, tune in, and drop out. – Timothy Leary

As more information is released on the potentials of psychedelics, the people’s perception of drugs is also starting to change. Psychedelics are at the forefront of many different studies ranging from their use on chronic pain, the reduction of drug addiction to opioids, and PTSD with military veterans. It seems that many of these now illegal substances will soon be prescribed by doctors to help them overcome some of their long-lasting ailments. The question we must ask ourselves is how are these changes going to impact our consciousnesses as a whole? Is there a middle ground when it comes to psychedelic use and the policies behind it?
